This year, the FT Business of Luxury Summit will be hosted by Mexico. For some, this may be surprising. But is it? Luxury is a global industry, and Mexico is among the Next-Eleven, identified by Goldman Sachs to become – along with the BRICs – one of the largest economies in the 21st century.
A luxury event like this is where one would expect to meet superyacht industry professionals. The reality is that, on the 2012 edition in Marrakesh, the industry was only represented by Y.CO, Oceanco and Perini Navi. Three companies. The same superyacht industry that sells yachts worth hundreds of millions of euros, and claims to be the ultimate lifestyle boost for the super-rich. Go figure.
